Excursion Day! Destination: Charleston

Today was excursion day and our destination was Charleston, SC. We got an opportunity to meet with the South Carolina Advocates for Epilepsy (S.A.F.E.) organization and its passionate founder, Karen St. Marie. S.A.F.E. does not only do extremely important work by supporting people with epilepsy and their close-ones but also informing public about the disease.

We got to make hats for epilepsy patients to be used during treatment and hear a story from motivational speaker who was diagnosed with epilepsy when he was 21. Making hats was fun and most importantly it was a great reminder to have awareness about different situations people experience in their lives.

My favorite part of this day was communicating with a S.A.F.E. volunteer while making a hat. I chatted with a mom who's child was diagnosed 8 years ago. Talking with this person was touching, inspiring and eye-opening for me.

During our day we also visited Hunley submarine museum and a company where wind power generators are being tested. Both of these activities were educational and interesting. Like every day here in SUSI-program, I learned a lot from totally new subjects and enjoyed this information and experience

At the end of our day we got a chance to shop in a huge outlet called Tanger. Unfortunately we had only 60 minutes' time to shop and eat dinner so obviously dinner was skipped for today. This outlet was like our day: amazing, busy and something I have never seen before.
