CIVIC ENGAGEMENT
University of South Carolina
The Study of the U.S. Institutes on Civic Engagement will provide participants with an overview of how citizens have shaped U.S. history, government, and society both as individuals and groups. During the summer of 2021 the virtual academic program will define civic engagement, examine its development in the United States, and explore topics such as citizenship, community building, economic development, grassroots activism, political leadership, and volunteerism. The virtual academic program will be complemented in the summer of 2022 with hands-on sessions, tours, and workshops designed to gain experience and build skills in these topics. Together the virtual program in 2021 and the in-person program in 2022 of the Institutes will encourage participants to develop innovative and practical plans to become engaged citizens in their own communities.

Washington State University
The Study of the U.S. Institutes on Journalism and Media will provide participants with a deeper understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a free press in U.S. society. Delivered in a virtual format, blending live streaming lectures and discussions with recorded and other Web accessible materials, the Institute will examine the role of journalists in preventing disinformation and explore strategies for media literacy such as critical thinking to counter disinformation. The academic sessions and virtual coursework will examine First Amendment rights, technology’s impact on journalism, editorial independence, journalistic ethics, legal constraints, civic journalism, digital and social media. Finally, the Institute will include the basics of journalism trade craft: researching, reporting, writing, and editing. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
The Study of the U.S. Institutes on Entrepreneurship and Economic Development will provide a launching pad for the next generation of entrepreneurial ideas that change minds, influence processes, positively change the world through the exploration of social entrepreneurship, across the socio-economic, cultural and geographic landscapes. The Institute will expose participants virtually and then in-person, to current themes in studies of social entrepreneurship, including social justice, diversity, American intercultural studies, and leadership in community development. The issues will be explored from numerous angles: local grassroots activism and civic initiatives, market-oriented approaches, and federal government policies and regulation. The Institute will explore social entrepreneurship in the context of a globalized society and draw comparisons between the United States and the participants’ home countries. After concluding the program participants will have the opportunity to participate in a virtual conference and then in person programming taking place the following year.
