Diversity in the U.S.

Today was one of the most interesting day of the program for me. I have discovered and learned a lot about the situation of "Latinos" in the U.S. and how controversial and offensive this word can be to some people.

We first had a introduction about the diversity in the U.S. regarding the Latin American community with Ms. Liliane Bunch Li. This topic leads us to speak about immigration in general and the solutions that some countries proposed, often radical. Thus, this topic created a strong debate among the SUSI participants. Indeed everyone had a different point of view on this "issue", sometimes in contradiction with others.

Then, Ms. Myriam E. Torres, who studies the Hispanic and Latino population in the U.S., explained the actual situation of Latino through an fine analysis on the history of this community and the U.S. It is, therefore, important to learn about the history behind this immigration in order to understand the actual situation. One thing that struck me is the fact that the "Latinos" are nowadays the most represented minority in the U.S., even before African Americans.

Finally, we visited African American Museum, a reminder of the past that we should all not forget.

We ended the day in a very good note: the birthday of two SUSI participants, Hanine and Isabel! I should also like to add a special word of thanks for all the speakers of the day, taking time to share their knowledge with us. I am really grateful to have the chance to participate in this program that help me grow everyday.
