Journalism and Leadership Development

The highlight of my day was the workshop on Leadership Development with Ms. Tamara Crooks. The workshop was a mix of lectures and activities with the purpose of further developing our leadership skills as potential leaders of positive change in our countries. I got to learn more regarding the importance of group communication and cooperation in achieving great results as a team. Throughout this workshop we also did an activity where we had to ask questions to get to know each other better. I loved the honesty and openness of other participants while answering the questions I asked them, which made me realize how much we as young people have in common, and therefore made me create a stronger bond with them. Later, we visited the Daily Evergreen Newsroom where we had the chance to talk with journalists of the newspaper, exchange our experiences and hear interesting stories of their experiences on the media. Their stories were inspiring because of their courage to report for the social welfare of the whole community despite many obstacles they have to face while doing that. Their accomplishments show that hard work and respecting ethics while reporting brings positive change in the society.

Despite everything I am learning on media and journalism, I am overall impressed with the American culture thus far. I admire how open people are to new ideas and insights and how much they appreciate diversity and cherish equality and human rights. I believe that these are fundamental values that each country should look up to, and my experience in America is making me realize how much I wish to become an advocate of these values in my home country, in the near future!
