Painting Minds and Souls in Shades of Diversity
Trying to meet new people and keeping an open mind in getting to know other cultures can help us to develop and become more mature people. I would not trade this experience for anything, and I can definitely say that this is one of the best moments of my life. I feel like I've done so much already and I've only been here three weeks.
Today was our last class with Professor Dawson. Time flies so fast! I will always remember the words of this well prepared teacher. She tried to "paint” our minds and our souls in the shades of diversity. She tried to make us understand how important it is to be tolerant and to accept everyone for who they are, no matter what our differences are. The concept of diversity means understanding and respecting that everyone is unique.
Our lunch was at The Westin, an urban retreat in the heart of downtown Chattanooga. Here, for two hours, we had the chance to meet some important people in the community, to communicate with them and make connections for our future. One of my favorite things about studying in another country is how you get to be part of a community that opens doors for you to meet people from all over the world.
Our day continued volunteering in a place full of smiles and joy, the Northside Neighborhood House, a social agency that promotes the independence of residents in North Chattanooga by providing a hand up through education and assistance. We played with the kids, various funny games, and for a few minutes we briefly spoke to them about us and about the countries we came from. Bright grinning faces and the sparkle in small innocent eyes can bring a smile to my face every time.
So, today was about coursework, in the morning, and volunteer opportunities within the local community, in the afternoon.
Looking forward to new adventures!
