SUSI for Humanity

It is hard to believe that it has been over a week since we all arrived in Columbia, SC. So far, the experience has been incredibly busy but unbelievably eye-opening and rewarding. Today was a very special day because it was our first service and volunteering activity. For 6 hours and in the intense heat of the South, 22 SUSI leaders helped out on a Habitat for Humanity construction site.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that helps families build and improve places to call home. On this particular construction site, a number of affordable houses were being built by this fantastic organization for local families in need. As part of the work, we painted, laid flooring, cleared driveways and front yards, and did whatever other task that needed to be done on the day in order to help Habitat for Humanity make the project a success.

There was no doubt that the work was extremely difficult. I am still getting used to the intense heat and humidity of South Carolina, however it really was a worthwhile experience. On site, we were introduced to a number of individuals who would eventually call these houses their home and it was really interesting to hear their stories and indeed motivations.

It was great also that we all really bonded as a group. We have all become so close over the past week. It certainly will be difficult to say goodbye to this group of amazing people when the time comes.
