"Today it’s been a busy week!”
“A story behind every door”, this is what we learned after wandering through some historic houses at the Lexington County Museum. We saw the oldest documented house in Lexington and the John Fox House, a two-story building where over 50 people lived. I am positive we had a great chance to catch a glimpse of pre-Civil War living conditions.
In order to deepen our understanding of colonial life and post-Civil War Southern history, we visited the Levine Museum of the New South, where “Come to understand” it what you see as soon as you step inside. And that’s what we did: walking past artifacts, images, video clips and oral histories, we learned about how African-American and Latino communities have shaped and are shaping the U.S. South.
Beside the rainy weather, which was very unexpected but still not too unwelcome, Charlotte fascinated the group and many of us asked, unsuccessfully, for a change in plan in order to spend more time there.
A couple of weeks have been enough for people in this group to warm up to each other. I am still very enthusiastic about knowing more things about each of them as days pass by. I am very thankful of every single person, they are all amazing people you can’t but learn from them. It was one of the girls' birthday and we all contributed to make her night one of the best she’s ever had and tried our best to make her feel at home.
Food is very different from our home countries, but we don’t mind trying new things. After all, we're here to live like true Americans, and that’s what we’re doing!
At the end of the day we all agreed that “Today it’s been a busy week”!
