Past to Present
The theme of this week was "Human Riights and Diversity", where we learnt about coexistence people of different nationalities in one large country — the US.
The saddest story is that of the African-Americans. Most were brought to the continent as slaves and had been suffering from that for centuries. On Thursday, June 30th, we visited African-American Monument next to the Statehouse in order to learn more about the history of this minority in the USA. The monument was installed in 2001 as part of the compromise of removing the Confederate flag from the statehouse dome to the grounds near the Confederate monument. Later, the flag was removed from the square to the museum.
The monument depicts all the history of African-Americans in the US, from shameful times of slavery up to freedom and equality. After visiting the monument and exploring the closest neighborhood, we went to the state museum — a large modern spacious building. The museum presents a lot of interesting things. On the first floor, we learnt more about American art form XVII century up until today. The second floor displays the nature of South Carolina and the third shows development of transportation and technique in the US. Also part of our group went to the 4D cinema, where we were shown a short cartoon about two rare parrots which tried to escape from unfair smugglers and finally fall in love!
